Title: EFME - Release
Post by: BarXQueen on Jul 19, 2026, 04:30 PM
:/gta

I have been waiting for 25 years for someone to release an emulator for Electrocoin machines such as Bar-X 7even and Magic 7. These machines are becoming more and more rare and so, in the interests of preserving some fruit machine history, I decided to release EFME

It emulates a wide range of older Electrocoin flat-top and casino machines up to £35 jackpot, and support is growing. The emulator offers the following features:

- Design tools for creating your own DX (or classic) layouts.
- Each layout bundle supports multiple skins, so one Bar-X 7even £25 bundle can hold every artwork variant.
- An Arcade function, you can specify how many machines to open on screen and it will fill your screen with Bar-X machines
- George - George will play machines for you. Ctrl+G to activate
- Punters feature. One downside of FME generally is that the machines are always dead. This feature will play multiple machines in the background and at random so you then don't know what has paid and what hasn't. No looking at the meters though!
- Extensive help files

The emulator doesn't ship with any layouts, when you install the application it will create an EFME folder in your documents folder with a subfolder called Layouts - just drop the layouts in there and you are good to go. You should only use the emulator to play ROMs you own the actual machine for.

Tested on Windows 10 and 11, any issues post them here and I will try my best to fix them. You'll need the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime, the installer will point you at it if it's missing.

To install, download the zip, right-click it and choose "Extract All", then run the EFME-Setup file inside and follow the prompts; it installs to your user account only and creates the Documents\EFME\Layouts folder for you.

Windows may warn that the publisher is unknown, which is normal for free, unsigned software; just click "More info" then "Run anyway".

This is one fantastic Emulator and it's been an absolute honour to be involved in its development.  Many thanks to BXQ for reaching out to me in the first place.

At the time of writing there are TWO layouts available to download from the Release Area.  Many more layout releases are planned in the coming weeks so please keep looking in.

[EDIT] Make that three with Pooks RedBar DX....

Thank you for this emulator i have been waiting to play propper electro coins with the hidden extra nudges and of course those bar x seven types on there real roms.
The layout i would like to see is either Super Red Bar Or Big Bar 7 in the casino cabs on the £5 £10 £15 £25 jackpot as these are electrocoins i have played the most, oop here in the north east we have many electro coins out there we have some of the magic 7 bat x 7s on £25 jackpots at 10p play and we have one casino big bar 7 on £1 £2 £5 £15 Jackpot also on 10p play, we used to have some Bar X on £2 £10 jackpots 20p play in the mini cabs but they got removed and replaced with shitty video cabs. Thank you for this one :) Would there be anything like the Partytime Double Decker or would this be the newer hardware that's not emulated yet? Is that MPU6?

Nah, that's Astra Pluto 6 which isn't emulated as yet.

Many thanks for this BarXQueen, I'm still having a proper poke around in all the various screens and options but this is a very comprehensive emulator!

Developer options > turbo play + George is quite the combo to get loads of cash through a machine quickly.

Can I ask what the difference is between what EFME is emulating and the Electrocoin games in MFME? If memory serves MFME runs the Concept ROMs for these machines, and I take it EFME is running the original Electrocoin ROMs, is that correct?

i.e. This is the first time the 'proper' Electrocoin ROMs have been running in an emulator?

You are correct. MFME handles Concept ROMs and some others like MAB, plus some early Electrocoin ROMs. The later Electrocoin ROMs either don't boot in MFME or offer a win every spin. EFME emulates Casino (Bar-X, Red Bar, Big 7 family), Upright (Magic 7 family) and Flat Top (older "Super" Bar-X and similar, including Pook's Red Bar release).

I have seen different ROMs for the sitdown machines, though I'm not sure the gameplay differs. Casino Big 7 seems to use the Red Bar ROMs, and the whole Magic 7 family (Magic BAR, Bar-X 7, etc) all seem descended from a game called Cool 7s from at least 25 years ago, which would be nice to see preserved too.

A few other games run that I have never heard of (Spinna Winna, anyone?), so it would be interesting to hear what others remember. There are more Electrocoin games out there than people realise, and I've been surprised how many have surfaced.

The ROM variants seem to be about protocols more than anything. I haven't found any with different profiles in what's available so far. I'm looking forward to the famous "silent streak" ROMs surfacing, and I'm convinced different operators ran versions allowing bigger variances, though that could be down to RTP settings.

Thank you BXQ! This is just want I always needed. No need for a bar-X machine in a lounge, kitchen, garage etc like I know certain youtubers have. I've been wanting these extra nudges machines for a while, and the bar-x 7 I play a lot. I also miss a magic 7 from the admeral that was on £5 JP 10P play. Now I can play whenever I like. I've never heard that alarm noise before though when the layout first loads it made me jump!

lol, all the machines are shipped with a clear memory, that is the "RAM clear alarm" - just means you are starting afresh with no previous plays

Oh, thanks for this, I don't often pop over to Dads, but this is exciting stuff.  Been longing for some of the Electrocoins to be emulated.  Many thanks.

Is it possible that you will be looking at getting those MAB (concept) roms to work, or will they work.

Will have to have a delve in and see what's what with this fantastic sounding emulator :)

Again, many thanks for all the hard work to being us this!!

Best wishes J

Post by: re-emulated on Jul 20, 2026, 12:58 PM
@BarXQueen I did try what I believe is a mab rom, but it didn't work, it was building a profile in the background but I know these roms had a weird interface to the Phoenix board.  I'm not sure if this is correct but I believe the rom image is scrambled and in between the rom and mainboard an interface unscrambles it so it can boot.

Again I don't know if my info is 100% correct.   I mean I could bundle one of the roms up if you wanted to take a look you might just know what to do with it.

Let me know :)

@BarXQueen will the multiplayer super oxo and oxo club run although if it does you'll need multiple instances of the emulator running at the same time like mfme ones do
Still on the look out for the original £6 token roms for bar-x

We've had a few emulators but this kind of thing is what I find far more interesting.  Really well played for creating and releasing the emulator.

Look forward to see how it develops over time.

I haven't had to look at the graphic capabilities when it comes to making a graphic layout.

Is it similar to mfme with the way you can edit on there?

I love the ui, it looks extremely modern and polished.

Which machine? If you have emptied them then you can fill them with the refill key (Doors and Keys on the Cabinet menu), although this bit isn't fully tested yet so may or may not work.

If you are getting a HP alarm you can disable the Emulate Hopper Levels in settings > Emulation

Hi @BarXQueen Thanks to you and everyone involved:) This is an amazing release and runs fluently on W10/11!!.

Some of the newer Electrocoin games were truly evil, and bankrupted a lot of us in the past, so I look forward to  getting back some free play time. I have looked on a couple of ROM sites and the amount of versions of bar-x is dizzying to say the least.

I am curious to know if there are there any plans for Pacdrive support for Cabs?

Oh yeah Bar-X Queen, just wanted to big up the accessibility of this new emulator plus its help files. As I'm blind, I have to use a screen reader to navigate the screen. It can read absolutely everything. I am using it like MFME where you can't empty the machine with the real hopper to make it easier for me. Unfortunately I can't use George yet with super red bar which would come in handy for the extra nudge feature and I have screwed up plenty of 6, 9, and even a 12 nudge sequence to get no win. Whereas George helps with all this and I can stop him whenever I feel like I need to stop him. Once again a massive thanks for these features.

George is now fixed on Red Bar, download the latest version from Pook's DXcellent site.

If there are any other accessibility features you would like just ask and I will see what I can do.

Labyrinth, Sphinx and Red White and Blue 7s already run on MFME, I wouldn't particularly have an appetite to add them to EFME but you never know. If you have any ROMs that don't run in MFME than I will certainly take a look at them.

I'll see what I can find.

A few years ago a guy sent me a mab that he's descrambled, not sure how, it worked to an extent but gave reel error on boot up.

It was a few years back, but I might have a backup as I don't have the contact any longer.

I'll get back to you with, hopefully, some info on the mab board.

TBH, I've no interest in anything the emulator emulates, I've never seen the appeal of Electrocoin lo-techs.

However, it's a new emulator, many do enjoy them, so I'm pleased for them. I'm also pleased you chose Dads as the place for the emulator, it's about time this place had some long term FME action. :)

It would be great if you expanded this to emulate all the Phoenix boards, I know we have mfme but they don't run any multiplayer slots like OXO Super Reels etc.

This could be a complete pheonix tech emulator for all the games.

I also I noticed, does the emulator only support 32KB roms.  Not sure if the larger files are on later pheonix revisions.  I have some 64kb roms and even 128kb for Electrocoin, 128kb seems large though.

@BarXQueen  I've looked over the rom dat.  Electrocoin/concept/mab, seems a little disorganised and I have no way of telling how to know what isn't electrocoin and what is concept etc.

Here is the archive, this isn't the full set as some sets I believe are video based as they are huge files.

Anyway, I came across this MAB Systems, upgrade kit.  It looks like the extra board is called the MEMEX board and gal security and programme chip are added to this board, then I assume this plugs into the phoenix mainboard?

Not sure how much help this is?

Hi BXQ. Not sure where the bugs and fixes should be in, but I just wanted to say, great work so far. I am noticing that the OXO machine has a sound issue. When I hear an OXO machine on a youtube stream and compare it to the emulated machine, it sounds a lot higher, just slightly in the emulator. It's no big deal but I hope this can get fixed. On the non-sampled machines and Bar-X 125, the samples are fine. Wizard had a lot of time playing with this and only got this in MFME 5.0 exactly, and yes, I know this is v1 of EFME, but wanted to bring this forward to you. As said, it doesn't bother me as it's only slightly out. Once again, big thank you for working on this. I'm checking back regularly for updates, as also checking for updates seems to chuck me back into the help menu for some reason without a dialog box stating no updates available which also would be nice to see.

@BarXQueen

I believe these are MAB roms.  But it's difficult to know for sure.  I believe these are 'Chuzzy' roms.

Again, it's difficult to determine as they are all lumped together, we don't have a specific MAB Systems folder.

Yes, they are MAB Bax-X ROMs. I've added them to the list  :)

Quote from: Electrocoinfan91 on Jul 24, 2026, 10:33 AMHi BXQ. Can you link to the YouTube video please so I can compare them?

There are a lot of Electrocoin roms categorised in MAME.  Might help with identification purposes.  I don't think MAME is up-to-date with Geddy's rom-dat though, so they might have different names to the roms in the dat.

And about future EFME features.  One thing I would like to see in a future update, mate, and that's meter click sounds.

P.S. Absolutely love the coin animations in the payout tray, by the way.  Really well implemented.  Nice to see the old Pound coins again.  Prefer them to the new Pound coins personally.

I could always record some meter click sounds, again via youtube, saving as a wav file and see if they'll work when supported. They will be official electrocoin sounds too.

I can grab it from MFME (I got all the other machine sounds from there). The one thing I am missing is the authentic "dropping through" sound. The BFM Casino Cabinet (Bar-X family) and upright (Magic 7 etc) have different sounds. Maybe a bit obsessive but it would please me to have the correct sounds  ;D

Freedom Fruits has some long play videos and probably features the dropping sounds if you're up for it

This video has the Pound dropping sound, right at the beginning.  It's the BAR-X Ten variant on £5/10p.  Linky dinky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ0kyigSLU4

This video is BAR-X 7even with 20p's dropping.  Linky dinky 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7jfb4GrRPE

The pitch is set on the board, either 8000Hz or 7576Hz depending on the game, I had just chosen the wrong one.

Quote from: Electrocoinfan91 on Jul 21, 2026, 08:54 AMOh yeah Bar-X Queen, just wanted to big up the accessibility of this new emulator plus its help files.

Thank you for your comments.

George is now fixed on Red Bar, download the latest version from Pook's DXcellent site.

If there are any other accessibility features you would like just ask and I will see what I can do.

Got the red bar update. George is currently battering OXO  SR P1 lolol 3 boards already! I'm guessing then that the sounds in OXO single player is higher pitched than the big OXO super reels, which now match the real machine. Guess this is a rom fault. When that golden bar oxo gets released, it should sound as it should be in that video link. As for accessibility, I'd like multi player machines to load as they do in MFME rather than having to focus on each machine miving the cursor to that cabinet window, so I can alt tab to each player and play 2 at a time..

Unfortunately the emulator is too far down the road of development to be changed, however I could put in a shortcut key (maybe tab and shift tab) to flick between the machines and don't forget George can be activated and deactivated with Ctrl+G

Dumb question time
When I update to the newer versions do i o have to save a copy of the original layouts folder with the downloaded games in or is it just the emulator that gets overwritten with the newer version

Yes it's just the emulator that gets overwritten.  Nothing wrong with saving a backup of your games though.

I think there are 12 layouts publicly available, most here and a couple from DxCellent over at DIF.

Currently loving George's ability with the nudges. After a youtube subscriber I listen to, George tries his best on nudges to do exactly what the guy does. Nudge, nudge, pause, nudge. Still having a little difficulty speed wise with the super big 7 mab release but emulator overall? 100 percent loving it! I've been wanting to play these other electrocoin roms for ages, and have never seen these mab chips in the wild, only on a youtube video. I have only heard chuzzy's also on youtube. This gives me so much variety overall what to play and I'm more electrocoin and digital now, less of the JPM's etc. Of course I'm still showing respect for Wizard for what he's done, I have deleted MFME for now as I had way too many machines, but I know I can always re-download it if I want to with any layouts. Love you all for your great work and keep it up. This is not a negative way within MFME, but I just don't really need it yet as well as MAME. I've had quite a load of exciting things happen as of late. First of all, retro-text-to-speech synthesisers have got emulated via Claud and Unicorn emulation have been made possible. Plus, the new EFME, thanks BXQ again, and I'll say it 1000 times. Thanks. A lot of things have gone up this year. And soon, I'm getting my ipub pat tested and costs looked into for fitting a new main board battery by a trusted electrician.

Hi BXQ, couldn't find the bug reports so put this in here. Basically, I'm experiencing with the super big 7 mab, if I try resetting the machine with CTRL+R, turbo gets activated, even though I have the developer settings off. Also Jay777 was changing some dips on the diamond Bar-X-7 and the same issue happened. Do we know of a workaround? This happens just with these 2 machines so far I believe.

Congratulations on your release of EFME, BarXQueen, and thank you for bringing us it here at DADs. This is as good as it gets for me with FME, I've always hoped that one day it would be possible to play those Electrocoin machines. Whatever happens in the future with FME, it won't get any better than this for me, thanks again.

Oh yes mate, me and Eggmans FME dat is over 1TB, every rom, every layout, every HD image, every bpak, BP, insprired, Vantage, Astra etc, anything FME related, including all the daft stuff from FF over the years.  Stiffys stiffulations, and so on.

I got v1.025 anyway, so sorted with that.

We tend to update it every few weeks.
